Frank Goff

I use direct carving techniques to sculpt wood, allowing the material to guide the process. With no preliminary drawings or models, I rely on intuition and pattern recognition to uncover what’s already present in the wood. Once a form begins to reveal itself, I respond with carving, shaping, and sanding—coaxing it into visibility, giving dead wood renewed life.

Much of my work explores recurring patterns in nature. I’m fascinated by forms that echo across species—petal-like structures that resemble shells or limbs, or intersecting branches that bloom into crescent or five-sided shapes. In oak, the interplay of medullary rays and growth rings creates layered geometries that inform my carving.

I also work in two dimensions through scratchboard engraving—an old illustrative medium ideal for rendering fine botanical detail. In pieces like Moon Dance or Midnight Morning Glories, I blend sculpture and drawing to create imagined spaces rooted in natural form.

Across all media, I aim to reveal the quiet logic of the natural world—how shape, pattern, and structure emerge across species, inviting recognition, memory, and reflection.
