Robin Woods Loucks
Painting is a spiritual experience for me. When I paint, time stands still and the images flow from my soul. Where I feel most intrigued and connected is in painting the landscapes around me—everything from the bare bones of hills stark against the winter sky to the first lacy green of spring that soothes the eye and lightens the heart. While most are of actual places, my landscapes are simplified and pared shown to their most basic elements. I am particularly fascinated by the play of light—the subtle changes at sunset or sunrise, or the sudden shift in luminosity before a storm. I am able to capture the brilliant hues that are gone almost before the eye recognizes they were there. I find that many don't see these colors as they are happening, but they recognize them in my work. These colors are best captured with the vibrant, intense, and long-lasting hues found only in pastels. In my hand, these soft chalks almost melt into the paper—each hue vivid, yet blending with the next. When each painting is complete, there is a vision of hope beyond the horizon that evokes the promise of a new day, or the joy of discovery.
